DREAM Act failed in Senate

On a vote of 55-41, the Senate failed to move The DREAM Act (H.R. 5281) forward procedurally on Saturday. Five more votes were needed to stop any filibuster by Republicans.  As a result, the bill is considered dead for this Congress. The failure stirred up protests and anger across the nation as many students and families were surprised by the result. Many students have participated in the advocacy process by telling their stories and contacting the legislators.  Typically they were brought into the U.S. by others at a young age and have adopted an American lifestyle.  The DREAM Act would have allowed them to stay to attend college or join the military.
