Taiwanese may enter the U.S. without a visa starting November 1, 2012

On October 2, 2012, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) announced that Taiwan will become the 37th country eligible for the Visa Waiver Program (VWP).  The VWP allows nationals of certain countries to enter the U.S. for business or pleasure for up to 90 days without a visa.  Although the effective date for VWP is November 1, 2012, Taiwanese travelers may apply for travel authorization approval through the Electronic System for Travel Authorization beginning immediately.  Taiwanese who want to come to the U.S. for other purposes, such as employment or studying, must still apply for an appropriate visa.  Individuals with prior immigration violations and/or criminal background are not eligible for VWP.
