Diversity Visa Program Adds Additional Passport Requirement

The Diversity Visa program (commonly known as "Visa Lottery"), which issues visas to "diversity immigrants" of countries with low immigration rates to the United States, has updated its requirements.

The program randomly selects 50,000 applications and allows them to apply for a U.S. green card. Those that are chosen while already in the States can apply for adjustment of status (permanent resident status). Petitioners enter the visa lottery pool by filling out an electronic entry form with their Name, Date and Place of Birth, Gender, Native Country, Mailing Address, and Consular Post to use if selected for a visa.

The electronic entry form will now require the unique serial or issuance number from the petitioner's valid and unexpired passport. Petitioners unable to get a passport due to being stateless or from a Communist-controlled country are exempt from this new rule. This change will take place on 6/5/2019.

This change is aimed at fraudulent companies that enter people's information as the petitioner without their knowledge and then charge those that are selected a fee for the visa information. The State Department's goal is to stop these companies and free up diversity visa numbers for honest applicants.

In general, the U.S. Government has tightened the application requirements for this program.  Some visa lottery winners' applications were also rejected due to incorrect passport photo format.

In fact, President Trump had proposed to scrap the Diversity Visa program altogether.
